Slowing Down

Some weekends don't need an itinerary or draw numbers, or timers.

They just need good friends, a campfire, kids running barefoot until dusk, marshmallows that are a little too toasted, fishing poles resting on the edge of a quiet pond, and laughter that carries long after the sun disappears.

This past weekend, a group of friends, people who usually spend their weekends together at barrel races, traded arena dirt for the peaceful pace of Clay's Resort in Ohio. The horses stayed home, but the friendships came anyway.
There was swimming and playing in the lake (my camera wisely stayed dry for that part!), campfires, s'mores, homemade meals shared around picnic tables, corn hole games that somehow became far more competitive than expected, fishing at golden hour, babies being passed from one set of arms to another, dogs soaking up every bit of attention, and kids who reminded us that the best evenings don't require much more than a fishing pole and enough daylight for "just one more cast."
Watching everyone together made me realize something.
Life grows in these ordinary moments.
Not the ones we plan for months in advance, but the ones that simply unfold. The conversations around the fire.
The laughter that makes your face hurt.

The quiet moments when a child sits alone watching the water, completely content.

The way a community of friends becomes something that feels a lot like family.
As photographers, we're often drawn to milestones, the birthdays, weddings, championships, and celebrations. But if you ask me what I hope these photographs become years from now, it isn't proof that we went camping.
It's proof of how it felt.
Proof that there was a season when everyone was together.

When babies were tiny.

When the girls still wanted to fish until sunset.

When marshmallows were perfectly golden (or occasionally on fire).

When nobody was in a hurry.
These are the moments you'll wish you could slow down.
And maybe that's exactly why they're worth remembering. 🌱
